Mumbai Monorail Updates: Breaks Down Heavy Rains Aimd Over 500 Passengers Still Stuck Rescue Ongoing

Mumbai: More than 500 commuters found themselves trapped when a monorail train ground to a stop between stations during intense rainfall in the city on Tuesday. The elevated service remained immobile for over two hours, attributed to a slight issue with the power supply.

The glitch struck around 6:15 p.m. as the train traveled between Mysore Colony and Bhakti Park stations. Emergency teams from the fire brigade and rescue units deployed cranes to safely extract the passengers.

“I boarded the train at 5:30 p.m., and the rescue began only after an hour. There were at least 500 people on board. This particular train showed up after a 30-minute delay, so it was packed beyond capacity,” a rescued passenger shared with ANI.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed he was coordinating with key officials and has initiated a probe into the mishap. He called for calm among those affected.

He promised a secure evacuation for everyone and asked for patience. Fadnavis noted he was liaising with the MMRDA Commissioner, Municipal Commissioner, police, and other involved bodies, with a full investigation planned.

“Due to some technical reason, a monorail is stuck between Chembur and Bhakti Park. MMRDA, the fire brigade, and the municipal corporation, all agencies have reached the spot. The highest priority is being given to the safety of all passengers. Therefore, no one should worry or panic. All passengers will be safely evacuated. I request everyone to remain patient. I am in contact with the MMRDA Commissioner, the Municipal Commissioner, the police, and all relevant agencies. An inquiry will also be conducted into why this incident occurred,” Fadnavis posted on X.

Those evacuated from the monorail were transported to a local hospital for medical attention.
