Mumbai’s Suburban Trains Face Major Disruptions This Sunday Due to Essential Maintenance Blocks

Mumbai’s bustling suburban railway network, a lifeline for millions of daily commuters, will experience significant interruptions on Sunday, January 4, 2026, as both Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR) conduct scheduled mega blocks and jumbo blocks for critical track and infrastructure maintenance.

Central Railway has planned a mega block on its main line between Matunga and Mulund from 11:05 AM to 3:55 PM, affecting the up and down fast lines. During this period, down slow line services departing from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) between 10:14 AM and 3:32 PM will be diverted to the down fast line between Matunga and Mulund. These trains will halt at Sion, Kurla, Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Bhandup, and Mulund before rejoining the down slow line at Mulund, resulting in arrivals approximately 15 minutes behind schedule. Up slow line services departing from Thane between 11:07 AM and 3:51 PM will similarly be diverted to the up fast line between Mulund and Matunga, stopping at the same intermediate stations, with a comparable delay upon reaching their destinations.

On the Trans-Harbour line, a separate mega block will run between Thane and Vashi/Nerul from 11:10 AM to 4:10 PM on both up and down harbour lines, leading to diversions and potential delays for services in that corridor. No mega block has been announced for the Harbour line or Uran line on this date.

Western Railway, meanwhile, will implement a jumbo block spanning from Saturday night into Sunday. This includes operations on the up fast line from 11:15 PM on January 3 to 3:15 PM on January 4, and on the down fast line and fifth line during specified shutdown periods. The primary focus is between Grant Road and Mumbai Central, where both up and down slow lines will be impacted from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Sunday. To manage this, all up slow line trains will operate on the up fast lines between Mumbai Central and Churchgate. Additionally, at Prabhadevi station from 11:30 PM to 7:00 AM, passengers will be permitted to travel in the opposite direction from Bandra/Dadar to Mahim Junction, Matunga Road, Prabhadevi, Lower Parel, and Mahalakshmi.

These blocks are necessary for essential infrastructure upkeep, including track maintenance, signaling, overhead equipment adjustments, and bridge re-grinding work, ensuring long-term safety and reliability of the network. Railway authorities have urged passengers to plan their journeys in advance and bear with the temporary inconvenience caused by these routine operations.
