Mumbai Civic Body Initiates E-Auction Of Properties Owned By Tax Defaulters Owing Rs 455 Crore

Mumbai: The Mumbai Municipal Corporation has taken stringent action against major property tax defaulters by attaching their properties and initiating the auction process. Under this drive, the civic body carried out attachment proceedings for a total of eight properties on Thursday, February 12, 2026. The properties in question include open plots, residential plots, commercial premises, industrial premises, and hotels.
According to officials from the civic body’s assessment department, an outstanding amount of Rs 455 crore 48 lakh 94 thousand 374, including penalty charges, remains to be recovered from the eight property tax defaulters. Despite repeated notices, the defaulters failed to clear their pending tax dues, leading to the initiation of e-auction proceedings for six of these properties. Meanwhile, two property owners have been issued notices with a 21-day deadline to pay their taxes.

Additional Commissioner Ashwini Joshi stated that if the tax is not paid within this period, the auction process for their properties will also be initiated.
The Mumbai Municipal Corporation has set a target of collecting Rs 6,200 crore in property tax for the financial year 2025-26. Of this, the civic body has collected Rs 5,426.81 crore from April 1, 2025 to February 4, 2026. With the deadline for tax payment extending until March 31, 2026, the civic body’s tax collection drive will continue until then.
