Mumbai Airport Plans Major Overhaul with ₹10,000 Crore Infrastructure Expansion by 2029

Mumbai : Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), a subsidiary of Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL) and the operator of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), is taking a strategic approach to enhance passenger amenities for a more seamless and efficient experience. In a proposal submitted to the Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA), MIAL has suggested implementing a User Development Fee (UDF) of INR 325 for departing domestic passengers and INR 650 for international travelers. This fee will help fund infrastructure development and technological improvements at the airport.
To balance the impact of this fee increase on passengers, MIAL plans to reduce airline landing and parking charges by around 35%. This reduction aims to offset the UDF and maintain a balance between infrastructure upgrades and the ongoing operations of the airport, ensuring it remains world-class. The move is also expected to positively affect airfares from Mumbai, as airlines will be able to manage costs more efficiently and offer competitive ticket prices.
MIAL Aims to Strengthen Mumbai’s Global Aviation Hub Status
In the next five years, MIAL plans to invest INR 10,000 crore in airport infrastructure and generate INR 7,600 crore in revenue from an anticipated 229 million passengers, creating a balanced revenue recovery strategy. The proposed new tariff structure will adjust the revenue mix by increasing the User Development Fee (UDF) while simultaneously cutting landing and parking charges by 35%. This change is in line with the tariff structures of other major airports in India, aiming to enhance revenue stability and improve the overall passenger experience, ensuring that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) remains a competitive and appealing hub for travelers.
MIAL is dedicated to continuously enhancing passenger convenience, operational efficiency, and the long-term sustainability of one of India’s key aviation landmarks. Notable initiatives include the Domestic-to-Domestic Transfer Facility at T2, the introduction of Taxiway Z for improved on-time performance and sustainable operations, eGates to reduce terminal congestion, free inter-terminal coach transfers, and FASTag-enabled parking, among other passenger-friendly improvements. These proposed changes will accelerate MIAL’s ambitious infrastructure development plan, preparing the airport to meet the future demands of air travel.
