Mumbai: The southwest monsoon has advanced into Maharashtra, but much of the state is still waiting for the widespread rainfall that usually signals its full arival. While scattered showers have been reported in parts of the state, Mumbai and several interior districts continue to experience humid weather, rising temperatures and only intermittent rain.
Weather experts say the confusion stems from the difference between the monsoon’s arrival and its rainfall intensity. Although the monsoon has officially moved into Maharashtra the weather systems needed to generate widespread and substained rain remain weak. As a result, rainfall activity across large parts of the state has been below expectations for early June.
The situation has been influenced by western distribuances over northern India, which have disrupted the normal monsoon flow and slowed the development of strong rain bearing systems over western and central India. This has led to uneven rainfall distribution, with some costal areas reciving showers while regions in Marathawada, Vidarbha and parts of western Maharashtra continue to wait for consistent rain.
For farmers, the delay is significant. Agricultural authorities have advised caution and urged cultivators not to begin large scale sowing based solely on isolated pre monsoon showers, as dependable rainfall is yet to set in across several districts.
The good news is that meteorological forecasts indicate an increase in rainfall activity during the second half of June as monsoon conditions strengthen. Until then, Maharashtra is likely to witness a mix of cloudy skies, humidity and occasional showers rather than the steady downpours typically associated with the peak monsoon season.
In short, the monsoon has reached Maharashtra on paper, but for many residents across the state, the real monsoon experience is still a few days away.
