Mumbai: Panic gripped Mira Road on Wednesday morning after a massive fire broke out at N.L. Dalmia High School, sending thick black smoke into the sky and drawing a massive response from the fire brigade. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties have been reported, as the school was evacuated in time.
The fire reportedly started at around 6 am on the upper floors of the school building. Within minutes, flames spread rapidly, engulfing the library, science laboratories, auditorium and several classrooms. Dramatic visuals from the scene showed smoke rising high above the campus, with firefighters battling the blaze from multiple sides.
Several fire engines, along with police and emergency personnel, rushed to the spot soon after the alarm was raised. Firefighters used hydraulic ladders and high pressure water jets to contain the flames and stop them from spreading to the rest of the building. After hours of firefighting, officials managed to bring the situation under control.
Initial reports suggest that the blaze may have been triggered by an electrical short circuit. However, fire officials have not confirmed the exact cause, and a detailed investigation is underway to determine what sparked the incident.
The school’s staff acted quickly after noticing the fire, ensuring that students, teachers and other employees were moved to safety before the flames intensified. Their prompt response, combined with the swift arrival of the fire brigade, helped avert what could have turned into a major tragedy.
Although no one was hurt, the fire left behind significant damage. The school’s library, laboratories, auditorium and several classrooms were gutted, with books, equipment and furniture destroyed in the blaze. Officials are expected to carry out a structural inspection before deciding when the school can safely reopen.
The incident has once again put the spotlight on fire safety in educational institutions. Parents who gathered outside the school expressed relief that everyone was safe, while many also questioned whether enough preventive measures were in place to avoid such an incident.
Authorities are continuing their investigation, and a final report is expected after forensic and electrical inspections are completed. The exact extent of the damage is yet to be assessed, but officials have confirmed that no lives were lost and no injuries have been reported, making the timely evacuation the biggest relief in an otherwise devastating incident.
