‘Maharashtra Special Public Security Bill Will Trample Free Speech,’ Says NCP (SP) Chief Sharad Pawar

Mumbai, Aug 14: Nationalist Congress Party (SP) president Sharad Pawar warned that the Maharashtra Special Public Security Bill threatens to erode people’s freedom of expression, urging broader resistance to its provisions.

Bill cleared in monsoon session

Speaking at a Mumbai conclave convened to oppose the legislation, Pawar noted the bill was passed by both Houses during the monsoon session and conceded that the opposition’s initial pushback in the Assembly fell short, though he said corrective action was taken in the Legislative Council.

‘Regressive forces’ remark

The former Union minister also alleged that “regressive forces” were making inroads into the judiciary, framing the bill’s passage as part of a wider drift against constitutional liberties.

Thackeray’s stance on sedition

At the event, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray said the bill contains no reference to sedition; had such a clause been included, his party would have supported it, he remarked.
