Maharashtra Government Warns Traders Against Using Harmful Chemicals On Fruits And Vegetables

Jaikumar Rawal has cautioned traders against using dangerous chemicals to artificially ripen fruits or improve the appearance of vegetables and grains, warning that strict action will be taken against violators.
According to an official statement, the Maharashtra government has received several complaints alleging that certain traders are using harmful substances to increase the sweetness of fruits, accelerate ripening, and make agricultural products appear more appealing in the market. Authorities believe such practices can pose serious health risks to consumers.
Rawal stressed that agricultural produce cultivated by farmers should reach customers in a safe and healthy condition without any chemical manipulation. He stated that maintaining the quality and safety of farm products is essential to protect public health as well as the interests of farmers.
To control these activities, the Directorate of Marketing has issued instructions to all Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs), private market committees, and holders of direct marketing licences. The circular directs them to carry out regular inspections and initiate stringent action wherever violations are detected.
The minister further said that any suspected cases involving adulteration or the use of hazardous chemicals would be referred to the Food and Drug Administration under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Traders found guilty could face cancellation of their licences as part of the disciplinary measures ordered by the government.
In addition, the state government has appealed to traders to avoid using thin plastic and thermocol materials during the storage and transportation of fruits, vegetables, and grains. Instead, they have been encouraged to adopt environmentally friendly alternatives to reduce pollution and promote sustainable practices in agricultural trade.
