Mumbai: A video capturing a man openly throwing household waste into the sea near Mumbai’s Gateway of India has sparked widespread outrage on social media, reigniting conversations about civic responsibility and environmental violations at one of the city’s most prominent landmarks.
The incident was recorded by a foreign tourist who was seated on the safety wall along the waterfront near the Gateway of India. In the footage, the tourist is filming the area when a helmet-wearing man arrives at the location accompanied by a woman and a child. The man is seen carrying a cloth bag, which he opens and empties directly into the sea, apparently disposing of household garbage.

The person recording the video appears visibly taken aback by what unfolds. “What was that?” the foreigner is heard asking as the man tosses the trash into the water and begins walking away with no apparent concern. As the camera follows the man, woman, and child leaving the spot, the tourist adds, “That’s not good,” clearly disapproving of the act he had just witnessed.
Since being shared online, the video has gained rapid traction across multiple social media platforms, with users expressing outrage and embarrassment. Many criticized the brazen display of littering at a major tourist destination, particularly in the presence of an international visitor.
