Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections recorded a voter turnout of 52.94 per cent, a decline from the 55.53 per cent registered in the previous polls held in 2017, election officials announced on Friday, January 16, 2026.
The figures, compiled and released by the civic body, indicate that just over half of the more than 1.03 crore eligible voters in the city cast their ballots during polling hours from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm on Thursday.
Among the 227 wards, suburban Bhandup’s ward number 114 posted the highest participation at 64.53 per cent. In contrast, ward number 227 in Colaba, south Mumbai, saw the lowest engagement, with only 20.88 per cent of voters turning out.
More than 15 hours after polling stations closed, the BMC declared the final turnout figure. Authorities confirmed that vote counting would commence at 10 am across 25 designated centres throughout the metropolis.

This election marks a significant political event for the BMC, which administers India’s wealthiest municipal corporation with an annual budget of ₹74,400 crore. The polls, delayed since the previous elected body’s term expired in March 2022, featured nearly 1,700 candidates vying for the 227 corporator seats, underscoring the contest’s intensity and importance for urban governance in the financial capital.
The lower turnout compared to 2017 reflects a varied pattern of civic engagement across Mumbai’s diverse neighbourhoods, with suburban areas generally showing stronger participation than some pockets in the island city.
