Mumbai: A tense situation unfolded in Mumbai’s neighbouring Mira Road area ahead of Bakri Eid after a disagreement over goats being kept inside a residential complex allegedly turned violent. The incident has further fueled political debate around animal sacrifice practices in housing societies across Mumbai.
The controversy began at the Poonam Estate Cluster-1 housing complex, where around 25 goats were reportedly brought into the premises before Bakri Eid celebrations. According to residents quoted in an ABP Majha report referenced by Free Press Journal, several society members objected to the arrangement, alleging that the temporary shed for the goats had been set up without approval from a formal society meeting or wider resident consent.

Civic Authorities Remove Temporary Shed
Residents reportedly complained that the goats were creating inconvenience within the society premises. Following objections raised by local BJP leaders, members of Hindu organisations and residents, civic authorities, along with Kashimira Police, demolished the temporary structure erected for housing the animals.
Despite the demolition, tensions reportedly continued late into the night as the goats allegedly remained inside the residential complex. During the heated arguments that followed, an unidentified individual allegedly attacked a youth with a blade, leaving him injured. Police later registered a case and increased security deployment in the area to prevent the situation from escalating further.
Society Clarifies Its Position
Office-bearers of the housing society clarified that no permission had been granted for qurbani, or animal sacrifice, inside the premises. They stated that the goats were only being kept temporarily before Eid and that no sacrifice was planned within the society compound.
BJP Raises Concerns Over ‘Illegal Sacrifice’
The issue has now moved into the political spotlight, with BJP leaders seeking stricter monitoring of alleged illegal animal sacrifice activities in residential societies during Bakri Eid. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde, along with several BJP MLAs and party leaders, reportedly wrote to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Mumbai Police demanding action against any violations related to animal sacrifice inside housing societies.
The letter was reportedly signed by BJP leaders including Mihir Kotecha, Atul Bhatkhalkar, Manisha Chaudhari, Parag Shah and Sanjay Upadhyay.
Separate reports by The Times of India stated that BJP representatives have also urged the BMC to impose a broader restriction on goat sacrifices inside residential societies and chawls during Bakri Eid.
Debate Intensifies Ahead Of Bakri Eid
As Bakri Eid approaches, the developments in Mira Road and Mumbai are expected to intensify discussions around civic regulations, religious practices and law-and-order concerns in residential societies. The issue has once again brought attention to recurring tensions linked to festival-related arrangements in parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
