Sion: A parked BEST bus caught fire at Mumbai’s Pratiksha Nagar Depot in Sion late on Sunday night, causing panic among staff members and security personnel stationed at the depot. According to a report by the Free Press Journal, no injuries were reported in the incident, although the vehicle suffered extensive damage.
The incident reportedly took place inside the depot parking yard at around 11.30 pm. Officials stated that the bus, operating on Route No. 9 with vehicle number 7692, had returned to the depot after completing its scheduled service earlier in the evening.
Security Guard First Spotted Smoke And Flames
As reported by the Free Press Journal, the fire was first noticed by security guard Bin Nawaz during a routine surveillance round within the depot premises. Officials said the bus had been parked and stabilised at approximately 10.21 pm before smoke and flames were seen emerging from the stationary vehicle nearly an hour later.
After identifying the fire, the guard reportedly attempted to access a fire extinguisher. However, the flames spread rapidly, making it unsafe for him to move closer to the bus.

Fire Brigade Controlled Blaze Within Minutes
Emergency services were informed immediately after the fire was detected. Fire brigade teams soon arrived at the depot and launched firefighting operations to contain the blaze. According to officials, the fire brigade reached the location around 12.21 am and managed to extinguish the flames by nearly 12.30 am.
Police officials and media personnel also reached the spot during the operation. The damaged bus remained stationed inside the depot as authorities began further examination of the incident.
Cause Of Fire Yet To Be Determined
Authorities said the exact reason behind the fire has not yet been identified. A technical inspection of the vehicle is expected to be carried out to determine whether the blaze was caused by an electrical malfunction or another mechanical issue.
Since the bus was empty and parked at the time of the incident, no passengers or depot staff sustained injuries.
