‘Assam Ka Maharashtra Se Bahut Purana Rishta Hai’: Eknath Shinde Recalls 2022 Rebellion at Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Swearing-In

Guwahati: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde turned nostalgic on Tuesday as he recalled the pivotal role Assam played during the 2022 rebellion that brought down the Maha Vikas Aghadi government and reshaped Maharashtra’s political landscape. Shinde was in Guwahati to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

“Assam ka Maharashtra se bahut purana rishta hai,” Shinde said Assam shares a very old relationship with Maharashtra as he reminisced about the days when rebel Shiv Sena MLAs had camped in Guwahati four years ago. He recalled that they had stayed at the same Radisson Hotel and credited Himanta Biswa Sarma and his team for playing an important role during that critical period.

The 2022 Rebellion

In June 2022, Shinde led a large-scale rebellion against the undivided Shiv Sena under then Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. The rebel MLAs first moved to Surat in Gujarat before shifting base to Guwahati. Eventually, more than 40 MLAs including ministers and independent legislators extended support to Shinde’s faction. The political crisis that followed led to the collapse of the MVA government. The BJP, despite being the single-largest party in Maharashtra, backed Shinde for the Chief Minister’s post, and a new government was formed with the support of the rebel Shiv Sena MLAs.

Sarma Sworn In for Second Term

Himanta Biswa Sarma took oath as Assam Chief Minister for a second consecutive term at the Veterinary College ground in Khanapara, Guwahati, with Lakshman Prasad Acharya administering the oath of office and secrecy to Sarma and four other MLAs at 11:40 am.

The oath follows a sweeping NDA victory in the Assam Assembly elections, in which the alliance won 102 seats in the 126-member House well above the majority mark of 64. The BJP alone secured 82 seats, while alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front won 10 seats each.
