Situated roughly 30 kilometres off Iran’s southern coast, Kharg Island functions as the main export terminal for Iranian crude oil. The island processes and ships the vast majority of the country’s oil exports, making it one of the most critical economic assets for Tehran.
Because of its importance to Iran’s economy, analysts often refer to Kharg Island as the country’s “crown jewel.” Oil produced from several of Iran’s major fields is transported through pipelines to the island, where it is stored and loaded onto tankers bound for international markets.
