Vietnam Speedboat Tragedy: Captain Arrested As Probe Intensifies Into Accident That Killed 15 Indian Tourists

Hanoi: Vietnamese police have arrested the captain of the tourist speedboat that capsized off Phu Quoc Island, killing 15 Indian tourists, as investigators work to determine what caused the devastating accident that has drawn attention to safety standards in the country’s tourism sector.

The 57 year old captain was taken into custody on allegations of violating waterway transport safety regulations, according to local authorities. The speedboat overturned on Saturday while returning from Hon May Rut Ngoai Island, leaving passengers struggling in rough seas just a short distance from the shore.

The vessel was carrying 32 Indian tourists and four Vietnamese crew members when it capsized. Rescue teams, joined by nearby boat operators and jet ski riders, rushed to the scene and managed to pull 21 people from the water. While most survivors have since been discharged from hospital, one passenger remains in critical condition.

The victims were part of a group associated with Indian smartphone maker Lava International, which had organised the trip as a company outing. Several of those who lost their lives were from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. The Indian Embassy in Hanoi is working with Vietnamese authorities to complete legal formalities before the bodies are flown back to India.

As investigators piece together the sequence of events, questions are being raised over whether the boat had taken adequate safety precautions before setting out. Some survivors have alleged that the crew did not respond quickly enough after the vessel overturned and claimed rescue efforts were slower than expected. Authorities have not confirmed those claims, and the investigation is still underway.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has ordered a comprehensive inquiry into the incident and directed officials to examine whether any violations of maritime safety rules contributed to the tragedy. The findings are expected to determine whether criminal negligence played a role in the accident.

The disaster has once again highlighted concerns over tourist boat safety in Vietnam, where fatal maritime accidents have occurred over the years despite tighter regulations. The country has become an increasingly popular destination for Indian travellers, with visitor numbers rising steadily thanks to expanded flight connections and easier visa access.

For the families of the victims, however, the focus remains on bringing their loved ones home. As the investigation continues, the arrest of the captain marks the first major legal development in a case that has shocked both Vietnam and India.
