US Senator’s Viral Audio Amid Tariff Row

New York : Internal fault lines within the Donald Trump administration have surfaced after an audio recording of US Senator Ted Cruz emerged, in which the Texas Republican sharply criticises Vice President JD Vance. The nearly 10-minute recording was shared by a Republican source and dates back to early and mid-2025. It captures Cruz speaking candidly to private donors, portraying himself as a traditional, free-trade, pro-intervention Republican.

Cruz takes aim at Trump’s tariff-centric trade strategy, warning that it could badly damage the US economy and even trigger impeachment risks. He recounts how, after tariffs were rolled out in early April 2025. The conversation, Cruz said, did not end well. He told donors that Trump shouted and cursed at lawmakers during the call, which stretched past midnight, the Axios report stated. Cruz recalled warning President Trump that if by November 2026 retirement accounts had fallen 30 per cent and grocery prices had jumped 10 to 20 percent.

The senator also mocked the administration’s branding of the tariff rollout as “Liberation Day”. When a donor mentioned the phrase, Cruz quipped that anyone on his team using those words would be “terminated on the spot”. A significant part of Cruz’s remarks focused on trade negotiations with India. He told donors he had been ‘battling’ the White House to move forward with a deal and named those resisting such agreements.

You are going to lose the House, you are going to lose the Senate, you are going to spend the next two years being impeached every single week,” Cruz said he told the President. The senator also mocked the administration’s branding of the tariff rollout as “Liberation Day”.
