New York : An Indian-origin truck driver has been arrested after a deadly collision in Ontario, California, which also left three people dead and at least four others injured. The accused, Jashanpreet Singh, reportedly immigrated to the US illegally in 2022. The crash involving 21-year-old Jashanpreet Singh occurred on Tuesday.
Jashanpreet Singh of Yuba City, California, was arrested on charges including driving under the influence of drugs and vehicular manslaughter. Police say Singh never hit the brakes before slamming into the traffic jam, citing toxicology tests that confirmed impairment. Law enforcement sources say Singh is an Indian national who entered the United States illegally in 2022.
As reported by Fox News, federal law-enforcement sources confirmed that Singh was encountered by US Border Patrol in the El Centro sector of California in March 2022 and released into the interior of the country pending an immigration hearing. As the case progresses, Singh remains in custody in San Bernardino County without bail, and his next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday at Rancho Superior Court in Rancho Cucamonga.
As we have seen with recent deadly accidents, foreign truckers can pose risks to American lives, US national security, and foreign policy interests,” CBS quoted the State Department spokesperson as saying. In August, Harjinder Singh, an undocumented immigrant from India, attempted an illegal U-turn on the Florida Turnpike in St Lucie County, killing three people.
