Ukraine Protests Arrest Of Citizens In India NIA Terror Investigation

New Delhi: Ukraine has formally protested to the Indian government following the arrest of six of its citizens by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), according to a report by Hindustan Times. The individuals were detained on March 13 along with a US national in a coordinated operation across multiple Indian cities, including Delhi, Lucknow, and Kolkata.

Indian authorities allege that the group entered Myanmar through Mizoram without required permits and conducted training sessions for ethnic armed groups. These groups are believed to have links with insurgent organisations operating against India, particularly in the northeastern region. Investigators also claim the accused were involved in facilitating drone-related training and may have transported drone equipment from Europe into Myanmar via India.

A Delhi court has remanded all seven foreign nationals to NIA custody until March 27 as the agency continues its probe. Officials stated that additional suspects are being traced and further evidence is being examined, including digital devices sent for forensic analysis.

Ukraine’s foreign ministry, however, said it had not received official notification from Indian authorities regarding the detentions. In response, Ukraine’s ambassador to India met with officials from the Ministry of External Affairs and submitted a formal note of protest. Kyiv has demanded immediate consular access to the detainees and called for their release.

The Ukrainian side also highlighted concerns about restricted zones in India, noting that such areas are not always clearly marked, which could lead to unintentional violations by foreign nationals.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the US embassy acknowledged awareness of the case but declined further comment, citing privacy considerations.
