US President Donald Trump extended warm praise to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a recent telephone conversation, telling him, “I just want you to know we all love you.”
The leaders spoke for about 40 minutes in what marked their third phone discussion this year and the first since the United States and Iran reached a ceasefire agreement. According to US envoy Sergio Gor, who spoke to news agency PTI, the two reviewed the “substantial progress” made in bilateral relations and expressed intent to finalise several major agreements in the coming days and weeks, particularly in the energy sector.
During the call, President Trump updated Prime Minister Modi on developments in the Middle East. In a post on X, PM Modi described the conversation as follows: “Received a call from my friend President Donald Trump. We reviewed the substantial progress achieved in our bilateral cooperation in various sectors. We are committed to further strengthening our Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership in all areas. We also discussed the situation in West Asia and stressed the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure.”
The discussion took place two days after India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri concluded a three-day visit to Washington. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to travel to India next month for extensive talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and other senior officials.
This latest interaction builds on previous calls between the two leaders. They spoke on February 2 to note advancements in a trade agreement and on March 24 to address the situation in the Middle East.
Separately, President Trump indicated that negotiations between the US and Iran might resume within the next two days. In comments to the New York Post on Tuesday, he confirmed that the venue for any such talks would remain Pakistan.
The cordial exchange underscores the close personal rapport between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi, as well as the ongoing momentum in India-US strategic ties amid regional and global developments.
