Trump Signals Potential Military Action as Iran Faces Widespread Unrest

United States President Donald Trump has indicated that Washington is seriously evaluating robust measures, including the possibility of military intervention, in response to the ongoing large-scale protests gripping Iran.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday evening as he returned to Washington from his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, Trump described the situation in Iran as one under close scrutiny. “We’re looking at it very seriously. The military is looking at it, and we’re looking at some very strong options. We’ll make a determination,” he stated, according to Al Jazeera’s reporting.

The comments come amid escalating antigovernment demonstrations across Iran, which have entered their third week and represent the most significant challenge to the Islamic Republic’s leadership since 2022. Reports from various sources, including Reuters and Bloomberg, highlight that the protests have led to deadly crackdowns by Iranian authorities, with hundreds of demonstrators reportedly killed in recent days.

Trump further revealed that Iranian leadership had reached out to the United States seeking negotiations following his earlier warnings of military action. He noted that a meeting was in the process of being arranged, but cautioned that the US “may have to act before a meeting.”

The president’s remarks reflect heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, set against a backdrop of recent regional conflicts. These include the US-supported Israeli military operations against Iranian targets last year, which significantly impacted Iran’s nuclear infrastructure during a brief but intense war.

As protests continue and Iranian security forces maintain a heavy-handed response—including internet blackouts and mass arrests—the Trump administration appears poised to consider a range of responses. While specifics remain undisclosed, the emphasis on “very strong options” underscores the administration’s willingness to contemplate direct involvement if the situation deteriorates further.

Al Jazeera reported that Trump’s statements were made in the context of closely monitoring developments in Iran, with the potential for military intervention explicitly raised as Washington weighs its next steps.
