Trump Firm on Aug 1 US Tariff Deadline, No Extensions, Sends Letters to 14 Nations

President Donald Trump has confirmed that tariffs imposed by the United States will take effect on August 1, 2025, with no extensions granted. This announcement follows the dispatch of letters to 14 countries warning of impending tariffs on their goods exported to the US.
Trump stated on Truth Social that the August 1 deadline is firm: “There has been no change to this date, and there will be no change… No extensions will be granted.” He indicated that letters have already been sent to multiple nations, with more communications planned “today, tomorrow, and for the next short period of time.”
These actions come after a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs that was scheduled to expire July 9. The letters reportedly specify individual tariff rates for each recipient nation, which include Japan, South Korea, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Thailand.
Separately, Trump indicated progress in trade talks with India during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu: “We’re close to making a deal with India,” he told reporters. This follows negotiations last week between a team led by India’s special secretary Rajesh Agrawal and the Office of the US Trade Representative.
Mark Linscott, senior advisor at the Asia Group and former Assistant US Trade Representative, provided context to Hindustan Times: “I think they basically sewed up what is likely to be an agreement in principle but not a legally binding agreement.” He described it as a statement highlighting agreed-upon terms rather than a finalized pact.
Trump noted finalized deals with the UK and China alongside the developing agreement with India.
