Super Typhoon Ragasa has unleashed unprecedented destruction across Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, and parts of southern China, leaving cities paralyzed and communities under water. Considered one of the most powerful storms in recent years, Ragasa has claimed at least 14 lives in Taiwan and 4 in the Philippines, while forcing large-scale shutdowns across southern China’s coastal regions.
In Hong Kong, dramatic visuals of a massive cloud canopy rolling across the skyline stunned residents as the storm loomed. Though the system is now moving away from the city, Ragasa continues to pound the region with hurricane-strength winds while advancing toward Guangdong, China. Authorities in Guangdong have shuttered schools and businesses, suspended rail services, and evacuated residents to more than 760 temporary shelters. Tens of millions remain affected, with widespread disruption to flights and train services reported by local media.
Giant cloud canopy over Hong Kong
A striking video from Lamma Island captured a vast shelf cloud forming over the horizon as the storm approached, its towering, rolling canopy underlining the typhoon’s immense scale and force.
Waters flood Hong Kong hotel
Another widely shared clip showed torrents of seawater crashing through the entrance of a hotel in Hong Kong, flooding its lobby within minutes and sweeping away furniture and belongings. Staff were later seen attempting clean-up operations after the surging waters also damaged the building’s exterior.
Taiwan township washed away
In Taiwan, footage from Guangfu township revealed powerful floodwaters sweeping through neighborhoods, obliterating a bridge and transforming streets into fast-moving rivers that swept away cars, furniture and debris. Many residents scrambled to higher ground as rescue teams went door-to-door checking for survivors. Authorities confirmed 14 fatalities while more than 120 people remain unaccounted for.
Infrastructure collapse and chaos
The storm’s ferocity also ripped sections off a bridge roof in Taiwan, uprooted hundreds of trees, and flung boats ashore, shattering glass barriers along the waterfront. Flooding engulfed riverside promenades, cycle tracks, and playgrounds. In one riverside restaurant, winds scattered tables and chairs, leaving the area in ruins. More than 30 people reportedly received treatment for storm-related injuries.
As Ragasa continues its path toward Guangdong, officials and emergency teams remain on high alert, with rescue efforts underway and millions bracing for further impact.
