British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is ready to step down but intends to do so on his own terms, according to a Daily Mail UK report citing a source close to the matter. The source told the paper that Starmer recognises the current chaos is unsustainable and wants to leave in a dignified way of his own choosing, adding that he will set out a timetable soon.
The report comes after former health secretary Wes Streeting publicly declared he would challenge Starmer in any future Labour leadership contest and called on the PM to “set a schedule” for his exit. Starmer, for his part, had earlier vowed to prove the “doubters” wrong and pledged stronger ties with the European Union.
The turmoil within Labour deepened following revelations about Peter Mandelson’s connections to convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, disclosed after the US government released the Epstein documents. The controversy widened when it emerged that Starmer had prior knowledge of Mandelson’s ties to Epstein before appointing him. Labour’s poor showing in recent local elections further inflamed the discontent, with several party leaders openly calling for Starmer’s resignation.
Streeting calls Brexit ‘a Catastrophic Mistake’
In his first public speech after resigning, Streeting argued that Britain should seek to rejoin the EU, describing the country’s 2016 referendum decision to leave as “a catastrophic mistake.” Britain formally left the EU in 2020, becoming the first country to exit the bloc and ending 47 years of membership.

“We need a new special relationship with the EU, because Britain’s future lies with Europe, and one day one day back in the European Union,” Streeting said, according to Reuters.
