At least 25 people have been murdered and more than 100 were wounded in confrontations at a jail in Sri Lanka.
According to local media and police, violence started in the jail in Negombo, which is located about 35 kilometers (22 miles) north of the capital, Colombo, on Sunday and persisted on Monday.
A violent clash at a local prison has resulted in heavy casualties, with a nearby hospital confirming that at least 16 inmates and four guards were killed. Pushpa Gamlath, the director of Negombo hospital, later stated that the medical facility had received a total of 23 bodies and was treating more than 100 injured prisoners and correctional officers, according to reports from the AFP news agency.
While police spokesperson Chandana Herath officially confirmed that the deadly riot took place, authorities have not yet provided specific details or explained what triggered the initial outbreak of violence. Meanwhile, video footage from Derana TV captured a massive police deployment outside the facility’s gates, showing a police bus transporting wounded inmates some of whom were seen sprawled across the floor away from the prison.
