What is the Case of Purbachal New Town Land Allocations?
The Purbachal New Town land allocation case in Bangladesh centers on allegations of illegal and irregular plot allotments within the government-developed Purbachal New Town project. One case focused on irregular allocation of a 20-katha plot while the second case constricted to allotment of 10-katha plot.
Following which, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed 2 cases accusing former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and family members of unlawfully securing 10-katha and 20-katha plots bypassing legal procedures and colluding with RAJUK officials. These allegations have led to criminal charges and convictions, with Hasina and others receiving prison sentences in connected corruption cases over the improper distribution of government land.
Initially, the ACC filed charge sheets on January 13, 2025 naming 16 accused in the matter then later on the second charge sheet was filed on March 10, 2025 extending the list to 18 individuals in both cases.
Trail And testimony-
After a very lengthy procedure of trial and a total of 31 witnesses, the court concluded the recording of testimonies in early January this year. In addition to this, Afnan Jannat Keya, the ACC Assistant Director and investigation officer, was considered to be the final witness and was thoroughly cross examined by the defence.
Sunday verdict was taken as the cumulative decision for both the cases as decided earlier this year.
