Sanders to Lead Philadelphia Rally as 50501 Protests Trump Nationwide on May Day

Anti-Trump Protests Sweep U.S. on May Day : On May 1, 2025, the 50501 Movement, a grassroots coalition advocating for “50 protests, 50 states, one movement,” will stage demonstrations across the United States to oppose President Donald Trump’s policies. The protests, coinciding with May Day, aim to rally millions against what organizers describe as Trump’s authoritarian governance and executive overreach. The movement, which emerged from a forum, has gained traction for its decentralized approach, having previously organized significant protests on April 5 and April 19, 2025.

In Philadelphia, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders will lead a rally at Independence Mall, joined by thousands expected to denounce Trump’s actions, including mass deportations and the dismantling of federal agencies. Sanders, a prominent progressive, has consistently criticized Trump’s policies, and his participation underscores the movement’s broad appeal. The Philadelphia event will highlight concerns over Project 2025, a controversial plan linked to Trump’s administration, as well as cuts to social services and environmental protections.

The 50501 Movement’s May Day protests will span all 50 states, with events ranging from marches to community service initiatives. In New York City, a rally near Trump Tower is planned, while Los Angeles will host a demonstration at City Hall. Other cities, including Chicago, Houston, and Phoenix, will see gatherings at state capitols and public squares. Organizers aim to mobilize 11 million participants roughly 3.5% of the U.S. population citing this figure as critical for sustaining resistance against Trump’s agenda.

Hunter Dunn, the national press coordinator for 50501, emphasized the movement’s nonpartisan stance, noting that it includes Democrats, Republicans, and Independents united in defense of democratic principles. “We’re focused on protecting the Constitution and supporting communities impacted by this administration’s policies,” Dunn told . The movement explicitly rejects violence, promoting peaceful demonstrations and mutual aid efforts, such as food drives and neighborhood cleanups.

The protests follow a series of actions by Trump’s administration that have sparked widespread controversy, including aggressive immigration enforcement and reductions in federal funding for education and healthcare. The 50501 Movement, alongside groups like May Day Strong, has partnered with labor unions and pro-democracy organizations to amplify its message. The demonstrations will also address the influence of billionaire Elon Musk, particularly his role in the Department of Government Efficiency, which critics argue prioritizes corporate interests.

The April 19 protests drew millions, marking the largest single-day demonstration against Trump’s second term. Organizers hope to build on this momentum, using May Day’s historical significance as a day of worker solidarity to highlight issues like labor rights and economic inequality. The 50501 Movement’s website lists over 1,000 events nationwide, reflecting its extensive grassroots network.

The White House has not responded to requests for comment from NPR and other outlets regarding the protests. Trump’s approval rating, at 41% poll conducted by SSRS, remains the lowest for any newly elected president at the 100-day mark since Dwight Eisenhower. As the 50501 Movement continues its campaign, it plans to sustain pressure through the summer, with a focus on voter mobilization and community engagement.
