New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump on June 17 on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France. The meeting will mark the first in-person interaction between the two leaders since February.
According to reports, the bilateral talks are expected to take place during the three-day G7 Summit being held in Évian-les-Bains, France, from June 15 to June 17. The summit will bring together leaders of major global economies along with invited partner nations, including India.
First Face-To-Face Meeting Since February
The upcoming meeting between Modi and Trump comes at a crucial time in India-US relations amid ongoing discussions on trade, visas, energy cooperation and regional security issues.
As reported by Reuters, the two sides are expected to discuss trade negotiations, visa-related matters and energy partnerships during the bilateral interaction. The report also noted that talks over the first phase of a proposed India-US trade agreement are progressing and could be concluded by mid-July.
The meeting also assumes significance amid recent tensions caused by US tariff measures on Indian goods and repeated remarks by Trump regarding India’s past conflict with Pakistan, claims that India has rejected.
Bilateral Talks Expected During G7 Summit
White House officials have confirmed that Trump is expected to hold bilateral discussions with several global leaders during the summit, including Prime Minister Modi.
Reports said the Modi-Trump meeting is likely to take place before a working lunch involving G7 leaders, outreach partners and technology executives.
The G7 Summit this year is being hosted by France in the town of Évian-les-Bains. Prime Minister Modi is also expected to hold meetings with other global leaders during the summit and highlight the concerns and aspirations of the Global South.
Focus Areas Likely To Dominate Discussions
Trade and strategic cooperation are expected to dominate the Modi-Trump talks. Discussions may also include maritime security, energy supplies and developments in the Middle East.
Recent diplomatic engagements between India and the United States, including visits by senior American officials, have reportedly helped ease some tensions between the two countries.
Apart from attending the G7 Summit, Modi is also expected to travel to Slovakia as part of his multi-nation visit.
