Breaking A 70 Year Barrier : First NDA Trained Women Cadets Commissioned As Officers In Indian Armed Forces

New Delhi: In a historic milestone for India’s armed forces, the first batch of women cadets trained through the National Defence Academy (NDA) has been commissioned as officers, marking a major step forward for gender inclusion in the military.

The pioneering group entered the NDA in 2022 after a landmark Supreme Court ruling in 2021 allowed women to take the NDA entrance examination for the first time. After completing three years of rigorous tri service training at the NDA and further training at their respective service academics, they have now joined the Army, Air Force and Navy as commissioned officers.

The Indian Army commissioned nine women officers from the NDA route during the Passing Out Parade at the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun. President Droupadi Murmu, who reviewed the parade, described the occasion as a “watershed moment” in the academy’s history. The Indian Air Force also commissioned five women officers from the same pioneering batch at the Air Force Academy in Hyderabad.

Unlike previous generations of women officers who largely entered through the Short Service Commission route, these officers have joined through the NDA pathway and received permanent commissions from the beginning of their careers, placing them on the same entry track as their male counterparts.

Their journey represents the culmination of a significant reform in India’s military system. For more than seven decades, the NDA remained exclusively male. The Supreme Court’s intervention opened the doors of the country’s premier tri services academy to women, creating opportunities that were previously unavailable.

Military officials have praised the first batch for successfully meeting the same training and professional standards as their male counterparts throughout the demanding programme. Their commissioning is being viewed as a landmark moment not only for the armed forces but also for aspiring young women across the country.

As these trailblazing officers begin their military careers, their achievement stands as a symbol of a changing Indian military one where leadership opportunities are increasingly determined by merit rather than gender.
