As tensions escalate across West Asia following the intensifying confrontation involving Iran, Israel and the United States, a senior Emirati diplomat has suggested that India could play an important role in easing the crisis. According to a report by Hindustan Times, Hussain Hassan Mirza, the first United Arab Emirates ambassador to India, said that a single phone call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the leaders of Iran and Israel could potentially help bring the conflict to an end.
Speaking to NDTV, Mirza emphasised that Modi commands considerable respect across the Gulf region not only among political leaders but also within business and public communities. He argued that this credibility extends to countries currently involved in the conflict, including Iran and Israel. Because of this diplomatic standing, Mirza suggested that direct outreach by the Indian prime minister could significantly influence efforts to reduce hostilities.
The ongoing crisis began after joint US-Israeli strikes targeted Iran, triggering a broader regional confrontation that has affected several Gulf nations, including the UAE, Qatar and Jordan. The situation has raised concerns about wider geopolitical and economic repercussions across the region.
Mirza clarified that the UAE has no intention of being drawn into the conflict and questioned why the country should be involved at all. He also stressed that the UAE does not want its territory to be used as a base by any of the parties engaged in the fighting. At the same time, he noted that Abu Dhabi’s unique geopolitical position—as a neighbour of Iran and a partner of Israel under the Abraham Accords places it in a position where it could potentially facilitate dialogue between the two sides.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi recently spoke with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan following attacks on the Gulf nation. In a post on X, Modi condemned the strikes and expressed solidarity with the UAE, while also thanking the leadership for supporting the Indian community living in the country.
