Philippines School Shooting: 3 Students Killed, 5 Injured As Police Detain Two Minors In Tacloban

Tacloban, France: A rare act of gun violence shattered the peace in the central region of the Philippines on Monday morning when two armed individuals opened fire inside a local high school. According to reports from Firstpost and Agence France-Presse (AFP), the violent incident resulted in the deaths of three teenage students and left an additional five individuals wounded.
Random Gunfire Causes Classroom Panic
The shooting unfolded at approximately 9:00 AM (0100 GMT) at the San Jose National High School, located in Tacloban City within Leyte province. Police Lieutenant Evalyn Diaz stated to AFP that the two shooters—identified as young males aged 14 and 15—discharged their firearms “randomly” within the educational facility.
Local media channels circulated a distressing video, later verified by AFP, capturing the immediate terror inside the building. The footage documented terrified students crying and screaming as they sought cover inside a classroom while the sound of live gunfire echoed nearby.
Suspects Apprehended and Weapons Recovered
Following the attack, law enforcement successfully took both suspects into custody. Tacloban Police Chief Noelito Getigan informed reporters that the perpetrators utilized a 9mm firearm alongside a .38-caliber pistol during the assault.
Chief Getigan noted that one of the suspects, a Grade 9 student at the campus, was apprehended shortly after the shooting, while the second minor turned himself in to law enforcement later on. Because both individuals are minors, they are being interrogated at the police station in the presence of their parents.
Potential Motive and Ongoing Investigation
While an official motive has not been finalized, early indications point toward personal grievances. “We are hearing bullying was the motive behind their actions, but we have yet to ask them,” Lieutenant Diaz remarked regarding the active interrogation process. She added that authorities are still working to trace the origin of the weapons, understand how they were smuggled into the secure facility, and map out the exact sequence of events.
Emergency Response and Institutional Stance
The regional police force confirmed that the five injured victims were immediately evacuated to nearby medical centers to receive urgent clinical treatment. In response to the crisis, additional police personnel have been deployed to secure the school premises and reassure parents, faculty, and neighbors.
According to reports carried by Reuters, the Philippine Department of Education characterized the event as a “high-alert situation.” The agency confirmed that central, regional, and division officers are collaborating on-site with school administrators and emergency responders. The national police issued a public advisory calling for calm, requesting that citizens refrain from sharing unverified details online and instead provide any pertinent information directly to investigators.
Context of Firearm Violence in the Region
As highlighted by Reuters, gun-related crimes remain a persistent challenge in the Philippines due to a high volume of illegal and unlicensed firearms across the country. Despite these statistics, active shootings within school settings remain highly unusual. A notable precedent occurred in July 2022, when a shooter opened fire during a law school graduation ceremony at Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City, causing three fatalities including Rose Furigay, the former mayor of Lamitan City.
