In a devastating incident in Pakistan’s Punjab province, a 9-year-old Australian girl of Pakistani origin lost her life after being caught in crossfire during a police operation following an armed robbery. The girl, Hania Ahmed, was on vacation with her family when the tragedy unfolded.
On the night of June 10 in the Chakwal district, roughly 300 kilometres from Lahore, Hania and her family including her parents and 10-year-old brother were travelling in a rented car en route to a relative’s home for dinner. Two armed men on a motorcycle suddenly held them at gunpoint and took control of the vehicle. The family’s father promptly contacted emergency services for help.
Police officers from a specialised crime control unit responded to the scene. As the robbers attempted to escape on their motorcycle, the family’s car also began to move away from the location. Officers, believing the car was being used by the fleeing suspects, opened fire on the vehicle. Hania was fatally wounded in the shooting, while her father and brother sustained injuries. They were rushed to a nearby hospital, where the young girl was pronounced dead.
According to initial police accounts, the robbers had fired at officers first, sparking an exchange of gunfire. One officer involved in the incident has been taken into custody facing murder charges, and a formal investigation is ongoing. The two robbery suspects were later identified and killed in a separate police encounter while allegedly attempting to flee.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has urged Pakistani authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent probe into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Speaking in Canberra, he emphasised the need for clarity to support the grieving family and ensure accountability. Australia’s foreign affairs department has extended assistance to the victim’s relatives and noted the profound impact on the Australian-Pakistani community.
The family, originally from the Perth suburb of Kewdale, had recently returned from performing the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. Hania’s father has disputed aspects of the police narrative, claiming officers initiated the shooting. Images of the bullet-riddled rental car have circulated on social media, adding to questions about the operation.
This incident has drawn attention to the tactics employed by the crime control unit, established to combat rising crime rates in the province. The event underscores the human cost when law enforcement actions go awry, leaving an Australian family shattered by an unimaginable loss during what should have been a time of celebration and reunion.
