Bangladesh Police claimed on Sunday that two principal suspects in the murder of student leader Osman Hadi escaped Bangladesh and crossed into India through the Meghalaya border, according to news outlet the Daily Star.
During a media briefing in Dhaka, Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police stated that Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Sheikh entered India through the Haluaghat border in Mymensingh with assistance from local accomplices.
“According to our information, the suspects entered India via the Haluaghat border. After crossing, they were initially received by an individual named Purti. Later, a taxi driver named Sami transported them to Tura city in Meghalaya,” the Daily Star quoted officials as saying.
The Additional Commissioner further revealed that Bangladeshi authorities received unofficial intelligence indicating that Indian security agencies have detained the individuals who aided the suspects’ escape.
Officials confirmed that the Bangladesh government is actively pursuing the suspects’ return. “We are maintaining communication with Indian authorities through both formal and informal channels to ensure their arrest and extradition,” he stated.
The murder that sparked protests
Sharif Osman Hadi was fatally shot at close range on December 12 in Dhaka’s Bijoynagar area, triggering widespread demonstrations and demands for swift justice and exemplary punishment of those responsible.
Authorities reported that Hadi was attacked while traveling in a rickshaw near Box Culvert Road in the Motijheel area. He sustained a gunshot wound near his left ear, suffered severe blood loss, and remained in critical condition before being airlifted abroad for treatment.
Hadi rose to prominence during the July Uprising and became the convenor and spokesperson of Inquilab Mancha a platform opposing all forms of political domination. He was a vocal critic not only of the Awami League but of mainstream politics in general, rejecting Bangladesh’s established political elite and positioning himself as a voice of generational change.
