According to local media, a 32-year-old man has been detained and charged with first-degree murder in relation to the death of an Indian national in December of last year.
After more than seven months on the run, Abdul Ghafoori returned to Canada and was apprehended at a Toronto airport on Friday, August 7, 2026, according to CBC News.
The case concerns Himanshi Khurana, 30, who was discovered dead inside a Toronto home in December of last year.
She was in an intimate partner relationship with Mr. Ghafoori, according to police, who had already concluded that her death was a homicide.
According to the report, officers from the force’s Homicide and Missing Persons Unit and Fugitive Squad collaborated with both domestic and foreign law enforcement organizations to make it easier for Mr. Ghafoori to return, without mentioning the countries from which he was taken. Last year, Canadian law enforcement issued a nationwide warrant for Mr. Ghafoori’s arrest following the murder. On Friday, August 7, 2026, Mr. Ghafoori was taken into custody and accused of first-degree murder.
According to the Toronto Sun, he was supposed to appear before the Toronto Regional Bail Center on Saturday, August 8. Khurana’s passing had previously caused shock and sadness at the Indian Consulate General in Toronto.
The Consulate described Khurana as a “young Indian national” and stated in a post on X on December 24 that it was working with local authorities to provide her family with any support available.
