JD And Usha Vance Welcome 4th Child, First Sitting VP To Have A Child In Office In 156 Years
On Sunday, Vice-President JD Vance and his spouse, second lady Usha Vance, announced the birth of their fourth child, the first to be born to a sitting vice president in over 150 years.
Alec Neel Vance was born on Sunday, joining his older siblings Mirabel, four, Vivek, six, and Ewan, nine.
Vance and his spouse issued a statement on social media announcing the birth.
“We are thrilled to share that Alec Neel Vance, our newborn boy, was born this morning. The statement read, “Our kids are thrilled to meet their little brother, and Usha and the baby are happy and healthy.”
They expressed gratitude to the medical workers at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center as well as the White House medical team.
The Republican vice president’s expanding family is consistent with his fervent support for more childbearing among Americans. Additionally, he has stated that the choice to have another kid was influenced by the death of his friend, conservative activist Charlie Kirk, in 2025.
As he began his political career in 2021 by running for a US Senate seat from Ohio, Vance, a former US Marine, frequently voiced concern about the country’s plummeting birth rates. “I want more babies in the United States of America,” he declared as vice president during the 2025 March for Life anti-abortion demonstration in Washington.
The 41-year-old vice president has traveled abroad with 40-year-old Usha Vance and their kids, who frequently board Air Force Two in their pajamas for the overnight flights.
Due to her husband, Usha Vance, the daughter of Indian immigrants, had already drawn some attention from the general public. Since it is uncommon for holders of the highest public positions in the United States to expand their families while in office, her pregnancy, which was revealed in January, increased that attention.
The 1800s were the last time a vice president in office became a father.
The newest member of Vance’s family was a part of the recent mini-baby boom among senior Trump administration officials. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt gave birth to her second child with husband Nicholas Riccio in May, while Katie Miller, the spouse of White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, recently welcomed their fourth child.
