Israel Kills Hezbollah Chief Naim Qassem’s Nephew, Personal Adviser Ali Yusuf Harshi as Lebanon Conflict Escalates

Israel’s military claimed on Thursday (April 9) that it had killed Ali Yusuf Harshi — a close personal adviser and nephew of Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem — as its offensive against Hezbollah in Lebanon intensified.

The development comes amid growing confusion over whether Lebanon falls under the scope of a two-week ceasefire announced by the United States and Iran on April 7. Israel has maintained it was not part of the deal; Iran insists otherwise. The Trump administration has sided with Israel, calling the discrepancy a “reasonable misunderstanding” between the parties.

Israel-Lebanon Conflict

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the broader ceasefire in a televised address, calling it a “milestone,” but firmly stated Lebanon was not included. He warned that the Israeli military has its “finger on the trigger” and remains ready to resume full-scale operations at a moment’s notice. Within a span of just 10 minutes, the Israeli military struck over 100 targets across Lebanon on Thursday. Evacuation alerts were also issued for areas near Southern Lebanon, with Israel warning of further strikes.

Ceasefire: Competing Versions

The US-Iran ceasefire, announced April 7, halts hostilities for two weeks. Under the agreement, Iran committed to immediately reopening the Strait of Hormuz, while the US agreed to engage on a 10-point plan submitted by Tehran. Both nations acknowledged Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s role as chief mediator. However, contradictions surfaced quickly — Israel said Lebanon was excluded, Iran said it was included, and the Trump administration denied Iran’s version. Iran also asserted its right to enrich uranium; Trump responded that the matter “will be taken care of.”

Trump’s Warning

A day after the ceasefire announcement, President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social reaffirming that all US warships, aircraft, ammunition, weaponry, and military personnel would remain positioned in and around Iran until a “REAL AGREEMENT reached is fully complied with.” The emphasis on “real” directly reflects the conflicting accounts of what was actually agreed upon. On Thursday, after Iran threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz again following Israel’s strikes on Lebanon, Trump issued a pointed warning: “If for any reason it is not, which is highly unlikely, then the ‘Shootin’ Starts,’ bigger, and better, and stronger than anyone has ever seen before… NO NUCLEAR WEAPONS and, the Strait of Hormuz WILL BE OPEN & SAFE.”
