Iran Strikes Bahrain Telecom Hub Hosting AWS in First Direct Attack on US Tech Infrastructure

Iranian missiles hit the headquarters of Batelco, Bahrain’s largest telecommunications company, in the Hamala district on Wednesday, April 1, marking what appears to be the first direct strike on a facility hosting US tech giant Amazon Web Services.

Tehran had previously warned it would target US companies operating in the region, and the attack on Batelco which hosts Amazon Web Services infrastructure in Bahrain signals a significant escalation in the conflict’s reach into the technology sector.

The strike follows a period of growing disruption to cloud services in the region. Just a week prior, Amazon Web Services operations across Bahrain and the UAE were “disrupted” due to the ongoing West Asia conflict — the second such incident within a single month. An Amazon spokesperson, speaking to Reuters, attributed the outage to drone activity in the region, noting that aerial strikes had caused structural damage and power failures at multiple data centres in the area.

The latest missile strike on Batelco’s headquarters represents a direct hit rather than collateral disruption, raising the stakes considerably for US technology companies with infrastructure presence across the Gulf.
