Dubai : Iran has signed a $25 billion agreement with Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom to build four nuclear power plants on Friday. The deal covers the construction of Generation III plants on a 500-hectare site in the Sirik region of southeastern Hormozgan province. The plants are expected to generate 5,000 megawatts of electricity. The memorandum of understanding was signed in Moscow.
Mohammad Eslami, who is also Iran’s vice president, went to Moscow, Iranian state-run media reported on Monday. Eslami said bilateral cooperation agreements would be signed during his visit, including a plan to construct eight additional nuclear power plants as Tehran seeks to reach 20 GW of nuclear energy capacity by 2040. Contract negotiations have taken place and with the signing of the agreement this week, we will enter the operational steps,” Eslami said.
The European nations accuse Tehran of failing to abide by the 2015 nuclear deal aimed at preventing it from developing a nuclear weapon. Iran denies having any such intention, and Russia says it supports Tehran’s right to peaceful nuclear energy.Britain, France and Germany have offered to delay reinstating sanctions for up to six months if Iran restores access for UN nuclear inspectors, addresses concerns about its stock of enriched uranium, and engages in talks with the United States. Any delay would require a Security Council resolution. If no agreement is reached by September 27, all UN sanctions will be reimposed.
