UN Chief Antonio Guterres Names India Ideal Host For Global AI Impact Summit

New York : United Nations Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres has lauded India as the “right place” to host the upcoming India‑AI Impact Summit 2026, describing the country as a “very successful emerging economy” with growing influence in global affairs. Speaking ahead of the event, Guterres emphasised the importance of ensuring that artificial intelligence benefits all nations and not just a handful of advanced economies. His remarks came in an exclusive interview with PTI at the UN Headquarters, underlining India’s leadership in steering global dialogue on inclusive and responsible AI.

Scheduled from February 16 to 20, the summit, the first of its kind to be held in the Global South, is expected to bring together world leaders, senior policymakers, and major technology executives to discuss both the possibilities and challenges presented by AI. Guterres highlighted that discussions must extend beyond technological potential to address ethical and equitable access, ensuring AI does not become a privilege limited to a few powerful nations.

He stressed that it would be “totally unacceptable” if AI’s development and advantages were confined to wealthy nations or dominated solely by the United States and China, hinting at the need for a more balanced global tech ecosystem. Guterres reiterated that India’s stature as a rising economic power positions it well to champion inclusive AI governance and global cooperation.

The summit’s agenda is shaped around three guiding principles – People, Planet and Progress  aiming to foster discussions on harnessing AI for sustainable development, shared prosperity, and technological safety. Guterres is expected to attend the Delhi event, joining other senior UN officials to further global engagement on AI and multilateral cooperation.
