RAWALPINDI – Aleema Khanum, sister of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, was struck by an egg while addressing reporters outside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, where her brother is incarcerated. The incident, captured on video and widely circulated on social media, occurred after a hearing in the Toshakhana corruption case, in which Imran Khan is a key accused. The footage shows the egg hitting Khanum’s chin before splattering onto her clothing, prompting a shocked yet composed response from her.
As Khanum spoke to the media, a woman’s voice can be heard exclaiming, “Who the hell is this? Kisne kiya yeh (Who did this)?” Despite the disruption, Khanum remained calm, stating, “Koi baat nahi, jaane do” (It’s okay, let it go), before leaving the scene. Rawalpindi police acted swiftly, arresting two women responsible for the act. According to police, the women were supporters of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, who had joined members of the All Government Employees Grand Alliance and the All Pakistan Clerks Association to protest unmet demands. The egg was thrown after Khanum reportedly avoided answering questions posed by the women.
The incident triggered a tense confrontation, with PTI supporters surrounding the women’s vehicle, damaging its windscreen with pebbles. PTI condemned the act as “shameful,” alleging the women were sent with political motives and accusing police of aiding their escape. The party demanded a first information report be filed. Several political figures, including Barrister Gohar Khan, criticized the incident and called for enhanced security for Imran Khan’s family. Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal emphasized that political discourse should remain respectful, while PML-N leader Khawaja Saad Rafique labeled the act “vile and crude.”
Social media reactions were mixed, with some users attributing the incident to orchestrated efforts against Khan’s family, while others condemned the act as a breach of civility. Imran Khan remains in Adiala Jail, serving a sentence in the Toshakhana case.
