A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck central Sulawesi, Indonesia, early Sunday, injuring dozens of people, according to the country’s disaster mitigation agency (BNPB). The quake, centered in the Poso Regency at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles), shook nearby areas, causing significant disruption but no reported fatalities.
BNPB confirmed that 29 individuals sustained injuries, with two in critical condition. The agency noted that the tremor, occurring in a region along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, affected local communities but did not trigger a tsunami warning. Rescue and relief efforts are underway to assist those impacted, with medical teams treating the injured and assessing the extent of the damage.
The earthquake’s shallow depth amplified its impact, leading to structural damage in Poso Regency and surrounding areas. While no deaths have been reported, authorities are monitoring the situation closely, as aftershocks could pose further risks. Indonesia’s position on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates converge, makes it prone to frequent seismic activity, with earthquakes of varying intensity occurring regularly.
The BNPB is coordinating with local officials to provide aid and ensure the safety of residents. Emergency response teams are inspecting buildings for structural integrity and offering support to those affected. The agency has urged residents to remain vigilant in case of additional tremors.
