China’s Big Fear: ‘If Russia Loses Ukraine War, China Could Become US Target!

[MS News Desk]
Beijing is concerned that a Russian defeat in the Ukraine conflict could prompt the United States to redirect its strategic focus toward countering China, according to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The revelation, reported by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), emerged during discussions with European leaders in Brussels, catching EU officials off guard.
Wang shared these concerns while meeting with the EU’s de facto foreign affairs chief, Kaja Kallas. When pressed about Wang’s remarks, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning sidestepped the question, offering no direct response.
In a four-hour debate covering various global issues, Wang dismissed allegations that China is significantly supporting Russia’s war efforts. He argued, per SCMP sources, that if Beijing were providing substantial aid, the conflict would likely have concluded by now. Some EU officials interpreted Wang’s comments as implying that a prolonged Ukraine conflict could serve China’s interests by keeping U.S. attention fixed on Europe.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly accused China of supplying arms to Russia, claiming on May 29 that Beijing ceased drone exports to Ukraine and Western nations while continuing to provide military support to Moscow.
Wang’s remarks come amid wavering U.S. support for Ukraine, Kyiv’s primary military ally. On July 1, the U.S. Defense Department paused deliveries of critical weaponry, including Patriot air defense missiles and precision-guided munitions, to Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Russia and China continue to strengthen their ties. Russian President Vladimir Putin is slated to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in China this September, underscoring their growing partnership.
On Wednesday, Wang also held talks with European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. EU sources confirmed that Costa, von der Leyen, and Kallas were fully aligned on all major issues discussed during these meetings.
