Chinese President Xi Jinping has stated that China and the United States should act as partners rather than rivals, according to remarks published by state media shortly after his arrival in Washington.
Xi arrived on Wednesday evening local time and was greeted by U.S. President Donald Trump at Joint Base Andrews outside the capital, rather than at the executive residence. The two leaders shook hands on a red carpet as Xi began his state visit.
In written comments released by the state news agency, Xi said the peoples of the two countries have long enjoyed friendly exchanges and that their interests are deeply intertwined. He expressed readiness for in-depth discussions with Trump on major issues concerning bilateral relations and the global situation.
Xi called for the countries to work toward a stable relationship marked by cooperation as the main element, competition within bounds, manageable differences and peaceful prospects. He noted that the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the goal of making America great again can proceed together.
The Chinese leader said the two sides should chart a correct path for major powers to coexist and expressed confidence that this could be achieved. He added that he believes the visit, with joint efforts from both sides, will produce fruitful results, improve the well-being of the two peoples and offer new hope for world peace.
Expected discussion topics during the closely watched talks include trade, technological competition especially in artificial intelligence and China’s diplomatic and economic ties with Tehran.
