Birmingham: Indian all-rounder Axar Patel joined an elite list on Tuesday by becoming only the third Indian cricketer to score a half-century and take four wickets in the same ODI on foreign soil, matching the achievements of Sachin Tendulkar and Hardik Pandya.
Axar produced a brilliant spell of 4/62 against England, dismissing the hosts’ last four batters. He then played a match-winning unbeaten knock of 57 off 52 balls, featuring one six and five fours, to guide India to victory. His outstanding all-round display earned him the Player of the Match award.
Sachin Tendulkar had achieved the feat in 1998 against Australia in Dhaka, scoring 141 runs and taking four wickets in the same ODI. Nearly two-and-a-half decades later, Hardik Pandya matched the record in 2022, scoring 71 runs and claiming four wickets against England in Manchester.
Axar and Washington Sundar Stitch Unbeaten 102-Run Partnership
Axar Patel and fellow spin all-rounder Washington Sundar (52* off 63 balls, one six and four fours) shared an unbeaten 102-run partnership for the fifth wicket to steer India to victory.
After England posted 258, India were struggling at 160/4 in the 28th over when Axar joined Sundar at the crease. The pair batted with remarkable patience and composure, taking India to 262/4 in the 46th over and sealing a memorable win.
The victory gave India a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series and also ended the team’s winless run on the ongoing tour of Europe.
Second ODI on Thursday
The second match of the three-match ODI series between India and England will be played in Cardiff on Thursday, with the match scheduled to begin at 5:30 PM (IST).
