Washington: US Border Patrol agents have detained around 30 Indian nationals as part of a large-scale immigration enforcement initiative aimed at identifying undocumented commercial truck drivers operating in the United States. The operation, known as Operation Checkmate, focused on individuals allegedly working in the trucking industry without legal immigration status. Authorities indicated that those arrested are likely to face deportation proceedings.
Enforcement Drive Targeted Commercial Vehicle Operators
According to information released by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the enforcement action resulted in 52 arrests in Arizona’s Yuma Sector between May 11 and May 15. Of those apprehended, 36 were found to be operating semi-trucks, with 30 identified as Indian nationals. Officials also reported that three of the arrested drivers did not possess valid driver’s licenses.
Authorities Cite Immigration and Safety Concerns
The operation was part of broader efforts by federal authorities to strengthen immigration enforcement and ensure compliance within the commercial transportation sector. Officials have increasingly scrutinized undocumented individuals working as truck drivers, citing concerns related to public safety, licensing standards, and regulatory compliance.
