“Work Fearlessly, I’ll Take Responsibility”: CRPF Chief GP Singh

One of the major central police forces’ chief has urged his staff to carry out their responsibilities “fearlessly” and promised to accept “responsibility and accountability” for their choices. Days after the CRPF’s riot-control unit RAF battled with demonstrators in the nation’s capital over exam paper leaks, Gyanendra Pratap Singh, the Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), delivered the motivational speech at the force’s investiture event.

The Rapid Action Force (RAF) was criticized for allegedly using excessive force during the protest when they deployed pellet guns.

“As the Director General of the CRPF, I want to assure each one of you that whether it is an operational battalion or a law-and-order unit, whatever decisions you take and whatever actions you carry out in the bonafide discharge of your duties, I take responsibility for all those decisions and actions,” Singh said.

“Keep carrying out your responsibilities without fear. In my capacity as Director General, I shall assume responsibility and accountability wherever necessary,” he declared.

A “professional post-event assessment” of the RAF personnel’s activities against demonstrators will be carried out, he informed news agency ANI just days ago. The RAF, which is part of the CRPF, has received training in managing crowds, controlling riots, and managing civil disturbance. The CRPF’s standard operating procedure (SOP) includes a “professional post-event assessment” following each significant operation.

The evaluation would examine the conditions that preceded the deployment of pellet guns and the actions taken against demonstrators. It will track the “sequence of events and whether the use of the pellet guns was in accordance with established protocols.”

With a presence throughout India, the CRPF is renowned for its ability to work with state police and quickly adapt to a variety of situational demands. Over the years, the public and state administrations have come to regard it as one of the most “widely embraced” forces.

The military has fought Maoists in the heartland and militants in some areas of the northeast. Operators of its Commando Battalions for Resolute Action (CoBRA) have engaged in guerrilla and jungle warfare operations against rebels.

The CRPF frequently works in challenging situations when there is no room for error in any of its decisions.
