Is Varanasi Becoming The World’s Second Vegetarian City? A Major Shift Is Underway

Varanasi: Known as the spiritual heart of India, Varanasi is witnessing a significant change in its food landscape, sparking discussions about whether the holy city could eventually become the world’s second vegetarian city after Palitana in Gujarat.

The debate gained momentum after the Varanasi Municipal Corporation moved forward with plans to relocate meat and fish shops from the city’s core areas to designated locations on the outskirts. Officials say the decision is aimed at improving sanitation, urban planning, and preserving the religious character of one of Hinduism’s most sacred destinations.

The proposal has drawn national attention of Varanasi’s unique status. Every year, millions of pilgrims and tourists visit the city to offer prayers at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, take a dip in the Ganga, and experience the city’s centuries old spiritual traditions. Supporters of the move argue that a predominantly vegetarian environment alings with the sentiments of many devotees who came seeking a religious experience.

However, it is important to note that Varanasi has not been declared a vegetarian city. The current plan focuses on relocating meat and fish markets rather than banning the sale or consumption of non-vegetarian food altogether. Residents and visitors would still have access to such food in designated areas outside the city’s central zones.
