Later this month, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will attend the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
This year, India will serve as the chair of the 18th BRICS Summit, which will take place at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on September 12–13. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, outreach invitees and leaders of BRICS member and partner nations will attend the summit.
At the UN press conference on Tuesday, September 1, Mr. Guterres’ spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, stated, “We have yet to officially announce that the secretary-general will participate in the BRICS meeting in New Delhi in about 10 days’ time.”
He was answering a query about potential talks between Guterres and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese leader Xi Jinping, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit, which was held in Kyrgyzstan from August 31 to September 1.
“Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability” is the subject of India’s BRICS chairmanship. To further enhance the BRICS strategic alliance across three key pillars, political and security, economic and financial, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges, more than 350 meetings and high-level engagements have been held in more than 25 locations around India. According to the MEA, India’s BRICS chairship has advanced BRICS cooperation through practical and development-oriented outcomes through various interactions and business-to-business and people-to-people activities. In 2012, 2016, and 2021, India, a founding member of BRICS, served as its chair. On January 1, 2026, India became the fourth BRICS chair. This year marks the 20th anniversary of BRICS.
In February of this year, Mr. Guterres traveled to India to attend the India-AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi. His second five-year term as UN chief expires in December 2026.
