Udhayanidhi Stalin Revives “Anti-Sanatan” Remarks In Tamil Nadu Assembly

Chennai: DMK leader and Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin once again stirred political debate after reiterating his controversial remarks against Sanatan Dharma during proceedings in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. According to India TV News, Udhayanidhi repeated his earlier call for the “eradication” of Sanatan Dharma while speaking in the Assembly on Tuesday.

During his address, Udhayanidhi stated that Sanatan Dharma promoted social discrimination and inequality, maintaining the same position he had expressed in 2023. His renewed remarks immediately triggered reactions from opposition parties and political leaders, reviving a controversy that had earlier sparked nationwide criticism.

The DMK leader argued that his statements were aimed at opposing caste-based discrimination and social injustice. He also defended his earlier comments, insisting that his ideological position was rooted in principles associated with social reformers such as Periyar and B.R. Ambedkar.

The remarks come at a politically sensitive time in Tamil Nadu following recent Assembly developments and changes in the state’s political landscape. Opposition parties strongly objected to the comments, accusing the DMK of targeting Hindu beliefs and traditions. Several BJP leaders and Hindu organisations also criticised the speech, calling it offensive to millions of followers of Sanatan Dharma.

Udhayanidhi’s earlier statements on Sanatan Dharma in 2023 had led to multiple legal complaints and political backlash across the country. The matter had even reached the Supreme Court, where observations were made regarding the responsibilities of public representatives while making sensitive statements.

Despite the criticism, the DMK leader has continued to defend his position, claiming his comments were directed against social inequality rather than religion itself. The latest remarks have once again intensified political discussions in Tamil Nadu and beyond, with reactions continuing to emerge from various political and religious groups.
