Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray has stirred a fresh political debate with a sharp comparison between the treatment of today’s Generation Z and the way Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was portrayed by his enemies centuries ago.
Speaking at a public event in Maharashtra, Thackeray said that while some people today dismiss Gen Z as “cockroaches,” Shivaji Maharaj too was mocked and referred to as a “chuha” (rat) by the Mughals during his lifetime. His message was simple history often proves those wrong who underestimate people capable of bringing about change.
“Those who are ridiculed today can become the ones who shape tomorrow,” Thackeray said, urging young people not to lose confidence because of criticism or stereotypes. He argued that every generation has faced resistance before making its mark and that today’s youth deserve encouragement rather than constant judgment.
His remarks come at a time when Generation Z is frequently at the centre of debates over work culture, social media habits, career choices and political engagement. By invoking Shivaji Maharaj’s legacy, Thackeray sought to remind his audience that great leaders have often faced insults and ridicule before earning widespread respect.
The comparison has quickly gained attention on social media, with supporters describing it as a powerful message for young Indians. Critics, however, questioned whether drawing a parallel between a historical figure like Shivaji Maharaj and the experiences of Gen Z was appropriate, leading to a wider political discussion online.
Historically, several Mughal era chronicles and official correspondence used derogatory language while referring to Shivaji Maharaj during periods of conflict with the Marathas. Historians generally regard these descriptions as political propaganda and wartime rhetoric rather than objective accounts of the Maratha ruler.
Political observers believe Thackeray’s remarks were aimed at connecting with younger voters while reinforcing Maharashtra’s historical pride. With Gen Z emerging as an increasingly influential voting bloc, leaders across the political spectrum have intensified efforts to engage with issues that resonate with the younger generation.
