CBI Court Remands Twisha Sharma’s Husband and Mother-in-Law to Judicial Custody

BHOPAL: A special CBI court in Bhopal on Tuesday ordered that Samarth Singh and his mother Giribala Singh be placed in 14-day judicial custody in connection with the death of Twisha Sharma. The duo, who face charges in the high-profile case, were produced before the court earlier in the day. With the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) not seeking any further police remand, the judicial magistrate proceeded to send them to jail.

The development marks a significant step in the investigation into the alleged dowry death of the 31-year-old former model and actor from Noida, who was found dead at her in-laws’ residence in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area on May 12, 2026. Her family has accused Samarth Singh, a lawyer, and his mother Giribala Singh, a retired district judge, of subjecting Twisha to dowry-related harassment that allegedly led to her suicide.

The timeline of events leading to Tuesday’s court proceedings reveals a case that quickly drew public attention. Twisha and Samarth were engaged in May 2025 in Noida and married in December 2025, after which the couple began living in Bhopal. Following her death, an FIR was registered against the mother-son duo. While Giribala Singh was initially granted anticipatory bail by a local court, Samarth remained absconding until his surrender on May 22. Police had announced escalating rewards for information leading to his arrest.

The case was later transferred to the CBI at the request of Twisha’s family, who met with the Chief Minister seeking an independent probe. The agency has conducted detailed investigations, including a crime scene reconstruction using an 80kg dummy to verify accounts provided by the accused.

As the CBI judge was dictating the order, reports indicated that concerns had earlier been raised regarding security arrangements for the former judge during potential incarceration. The court proceedings on Tuesday concluded without any extension of custodial interrogation by the investigating agency.

This case continues to highlight ongoing debates around dowry-related deaths and the role of law enforcement in ensuring thorough probes when influential families are involved. Twisha Sharma’s family has consistently demanded justice and raised questions about the initial police handling of the matter.
